With solar cooker we started advocating and popularizing its use and showing people its work by conducting seminars in various places and engaging in demonstrations.
It is economically free and enviromentaly friendly. Even young children can use it for their meal preparation.
When we started working on solar cooker six months ago, we were making two to three wooden box cookers per month. After making, we were transporting them to the users as the need was.
The demand increased in a way that we could not Manage supplying enough cookers in time .This forced us to manufacturing solar-cooker in rural areas where they are a lot of users.
What moved us mostly and exposed the use of solar cooker was four orphans left after their parents died in road accident. The elder was Apiyo aged fourteen as a girl was responsible for cooking to all of her sister and brothers followed by Odhiambo eleven years who was acting on command and forget when not reminded followed by Ominde nine years old and Akoth five years old.
Really their life was miserable. After coming back from school is when they go round searching for whatever they need including firewood.
When we found them we donated one cooker, showed them how to use it. Since then we have been monitoring its use and their progress. It is wonderful and very much different. They said, it is just as when our mother was alive we eat our lunch early and go back to school, even our supper we eat as early as 7 pmâ€. After school we just bring water, we bath and then we sit for our meal. â€When asked by co-ordinator, before they had that cooker at what time were they eating their supper she responded. 'at 10 pm.' Sometimes not well cooked food.â€
In one insident she said “ it rained before we come home, at home. There was no firewood, we looked for some which were soaked with water. Couldn’t light fire was just producing smoke we cooked but not a real cooked mealâ€.
After villagers see what happened most of them needed the cooker for their family use. For this reason, we at Amani would like to extend our task on producing other powerful cookers such as parabolic and papillon for extended families and restaurants.
First we would like NGO, donors and well wishers to help us purchase each of them as samples, teaching kits, and revolving credit fund to enable those who can not purchase one can get it through loan scheme.
